Skill India Mission – But how much of a success?

In stark numbers and figures, India is witnessing the worst unemployment rate in 40 years, an NSSO report says. Where the critics of the centre believe that this situation is due to the economic slowdown, the leaders of ministry especially Union Labour Minister Santosh Kumar Gangwar says that there is a lack of skilled workforce and not jobs. The main reason recruiters are not hiring in north India is a result of a poorly skilled workforce. This statement somewhere sheds an unflattering light on the Skill India Mission and arises questions around its potential to actually bring a difference. For a long time, many have criticized the movement especially PMKVY, the flagship initiative of the mission and recent top-level resignations have only added to the scrutiny.
